He told me that if I prayed, I would suffer all the more. “It doesn’t matter,” I said, “ I suffer for Jesus”. - St. Gemma’s response to Satan
Gemma was a young girl who lived in the small town of Lucca, Italy. From an outside view, she was like any other young girl. It's true, she struggled with many of the same things we all struggle with such as pride, obedience and selfishness. She also suffered much in her short life: the loss of her mother, poor health and the rejection of joining a religious order. But what many could not see were the intense spiritual attacks she suffered from the devil. He would inflict every temptation upon her and strike her with many blows. But God gave her many graces, moments of consolation and strength. She was able to see and speak with her ever present guardian angel and how grateful she was for his protection in her attacks. Mother Mary would also often come to visit and speak with her. And Jesus himself would come to her in prayer. He would invite her into His suffering in a very intimate way. She loved Him in His passion and shared His wounds. She shares in her diary how on Fridays, Jesus would come and place His crown of thorns upon her head. And she would say, “He proved anew His love towards me by giving me His crown of thorns until the following day; Jesus loves me most on Friday.”
