The Artist
Born into an adventurous Catholic family in the plains of Nebraska, Mary Kain grew up surrounded by beauty. From the sacred art that filled her home to the orange Nebraskan sunsets, creativity became a spark within her. Her journey began at home amid nature and the influence of her crafty parents. She went on to study at McCook Community College receiving her Associate of Fine Arts degree. Her greatest desire having been to grow in relationship with Christ and to serve His Church, she went on to serve as a missionary for two years. It was in this time of discovery of self and relationship with God that she began to discover her call towards creating sacred art. This call led her to travel to the streets of the Renaissance - Florence, Italy. For fifteen months she studied under the guidance of professional artists at Sacred Art School. Here she learned the way of the masters and encountered the beautiful relationship between God, the artist, and the canvas. Now Mary currently resides back in Nebraska and continues to paint in this journey of the sacred. Our world desperately needs beauty, and she hopes that through her brushstrokes, the viewer may come to encounter God Who is Beauty.
Little Vessels
“This world is thy ship and not thy home.” - St. Therese of Lisieux
These profound words of the saint will forever stand out in my mind. We are called to something greater than what this world provides. The image of a ship or a little vessel symbolizes our calling to be vessels of God’s grace in the world. A ship is also an object of passage; something to carry us to our goal. I desire to be a little vessel and for my paintings to be vessels that point others towards something greater - the eternal shores of Heaven and God Who is Beauty.
This journey will surely bring us up against rough waters, but we place our hope and trust in God and His mercy. As you can see in the image, the artist paints and focuses on Jesus’ Sacred Heart as the ship guides her towards eternal shores.
